Bill Maher warned Democrats President Joe Biden’s controversial “garbage” remark may be more consequential than they are anticipating in the election.

On Friday’s Real Time, Maher argued Biden’s comment could be worse than Hillary Clinton referring to Trump’s loyal supporters as a “basket of deplorables” just before the 2016 presidential election.

“I think it’s a bigger gaffe than people think. It’s so funny, Joe Biden, his whole career he was like Mr. Gaffe, and then here at the very end, he’s like Aaron Judge in Game Six. He just fucking miffed a fly ball and at the end of the thing and blew the whole [thing],” Maher said.

Biden made his “garbage” comment when condemning a comedian’s joke at a Madison Square Garden event for former President Donald Trump. At the rally, comedian Tony Hinchcliffe jokingly referred to Puerto Rico as a “floating island of garbage.” Biden was later accused of calling all Trump supporters at the event “garbage,” something he has denied. The White House updated a transcript of Biden’s talk, changing Trump “supporters” to “supporter’s,” indicating it was Hinchcliffe he was referring to.

“I feel like it epitomizes everything that the Trump people hate about the Democrats. They look down at us. It’s like deplorables times 10,” Maher said.

Maher later criticized Democrats again by suggesting they may have looked “weak” in their reaction to Hinchcliffe.

“I think that’s another Achilles heel that they have,” Maher said.

The comic added he needed to “defend” his profession. While he called Hinchcliffe’s joke “offensive,” he noted that the comedian is famously an “insult comic.” Hinchcliffe is best known for his Kill Tony podcast, which is centered around Hinchcliffe and other comedians roasting open mic comedians. The problem, Maher said, was that Hinchcliffe was at the event in the first place.

“It’s like bringing cocaine to a funeral,” he said.
