Twitter CEO Jack Dorsey has come under fire from critics who say his company isn’t tough enough on bad actors like Alex Jones, but the social media mogul says it’s tricky.

In an interview with CNN’s Brian Stelter that aired Sunday on Reliable Sources, Dorsey defended his handling of Jones’ account, which was rife with hateful content and conspiracy theory promotion.
Twitter had initially claimed the Infowars leader didn’t violate user standards, later making an about face and temporarily suspending him with a virtual timeout. Some have called for increased monitoring of content, but Doresy argued it’s not so simple.

“While we could do that, it requires so many resources. Hours and hours and hours of looking through video content ,” he told Stelter. “As we receive reports, we take action.”

Despite evidence that penalties can change users’ behavior, Dorsey wasn’t sure it would work in Jones’ case.

“I’m not naive enough to believe that it’s going to change it for everyone but it’s worth a shot,” he said. You know, but more importantly it’s consistent with our enforcement. We can’t keep changing randomly based on our viewpoints, because that just adds to the fear of companies like ours of making these judgments, according to our own personal views of who we like and who we don’t like and taking that out upon those people.”

In a candid comment, Stelter then wondered whether Dorsey missed his platform’s more youthful stages when it was more focused on socialization, adding that “now, we’re talking about how it is used to cause violence.”

In a perhaps even more candid reply, Dorsey said he’d rather not sanitize his view of the world.

“I think it’s just so important to see the world for what it is and I don’t want to live in a world where just we only see the happy things and we only focus on what makes us feel good because we got a lot of stuff to figure out,” he told Stelter. “So no.”
