CNN’s Oliver Darcy Mocks Twitter CEO’s Temporary Suspension of Alex Jones: ‘Comical’ He Thinks This Will Work
Twitter CEO Jack Dorsey was hopeful a temporary suspension of Alex Jones‘ hate-filled conspiracy-mongering account would force him to shape up, but CNN’s Oliver Darcy said the slap on the wrist was virtually worthless.
Darcy, whose reporting uncovered a slew of tweets he argued were in violation of the platform’s guidelines, bashed Dorsey’s handling of the matter, which the social media mogul defended in a previous interview with Reliable Sources‘ Brian Stelter.
“It sounds kind of comical that he thinks that putting Alex Jones in a Twitter timeout for a week is going to really effect his behavior,” Darcy said. “It sort of sounds like he’s a college professor. He’s dealing in hypotheticals and philosophy here. But this isn’t a classroom. There are real problems that are having real impact on people’s lives and it’s happening now.”
While Stelter gave Dorsey props for “asking the right questions,” he noted the answers might be lacking.
Dorsey had no reservations drawing that conclusion, pointing out that the CEO wasn’t embracing truly effective policies.
“You ask for a timeline on stuff, and he doesn’t have a time line,” Darcy told Stelter. “Even the current policies in place for reporting harassment they don’t seem to be working and it’s curious why he doesn’t have any answers, he doesn’t have any answers for today, right now. How can Twitter better effect the discourse on politics? And it’s just kind of baffling, too.”
Dorsey has been the target of criticism following Twitter’s slow crackdown on Jones’ account, which it still refuses to ban despite the assessment of some that his posts have crossed the line.
