Trump Says Sessions Will Keep Job Until Midterms, No Guarantees on Future
President Donald Trump has guaranteed Attorney General Jeff Sessions is safe. For now.
In a Thursday interview with Bloomberg, the commander in chief said he’d keep Sessions until the November elections, but offered no hints as to what his job status will be after that point.
“I would just love to have him do a great job,” Trump told Bloomberg.
However, it may not be much comfort for Sessions, who’s been under attack by the president for months, following the attorney general’s move to recuse himself from Special Counsel Robert Mueller‘s Russia probe.
Asked about that investigation in the same interview, the president declined to provide an affirmative answer on whether he’d comply with a potential subpoena from Mueller.
“I’ll see what happens,” he said, calling the probe “illegal,” crediting “great scholars” for arguing that a special counsel shouldn’t even exist.
As Bloomberg noted, Trump’s remarks didn’t stray from those of certain GOP lawmakers who predict Sessions will keep his spot through November, after which time he may be ousted.
