Bill Kristol Suggests Trump’s Lester Holt Tweet Was Him Panicking About Obstruction of Justice Case

By News Here - 00:06

The Weekly Standard editor at large Bill Kristol appeared on MSNBC late Thursday night and weighted in on President Donald Trump‘s recent tweet invoking his 2017 interview with Lester Holt.

Many recall Holt’s sit-down with Trump as the interview where the president revealed that his firing of FBI Director James Comey was about his handling of the Russia investigation, which was contradictory to White House’s claim that he was following the recommendations of Attorney General Jeff Sessions and Deputy Attorney General Rod Rosenstein.

However, in an early morning tweet, Trump accused the NBC Nightly News anchor of “fudging” the tape.

The prominent Never Trumper began by speculating whether Trump’s shift in behavior in recent days was due to him being “upset” by the favorable coverage that Sen. John McCain (R-AZ) has received lately and that he could be “envious and jealous.”

Kristol then said he was “struck” by the Lester Holt tweet.

“It made me wonder why he’s suddenly interested in the Lester Holt tape,” Holt told MSNBC host Ali Velshi. “Has he had a meeting in the White House or talked on the phone with Giuliani or something in which someone said, ‘Hey look, they’re moving ahead on the obstruction investigation, your comments to Holt are part of it. And that sort of triggered something in his mind. And he thought, ‘Oh my God. I better start trying to discredit that as well.’ That’s sort of the way he works.”
