Upcoming Neil Armstrong Biopic Leaves Out The American Flag Being Planted On The Moon

An upcoming film about Neil Armstrong‘s successful trip to the moon reportedly left out an iconic image.

First Man, the biopic starring Ryan Gosling, premiered at the Venice Film Festival and received rave reviews from critics (it currently has 92% on Rotten Tomatoes) as well as a ton of Oscar buzz. But as Business Insider reported, the film omitted a reenactment of the American flag being planted on the moon.

Gosling defended the decision.

“I think this was widely regarded in the end as a human achievement [and] that’s how we chose to view it. I also think Neil was extremely humble, as were many of these astronauts, and time and time again he deferred the focus from himself to the 400,000 people who made the mission possible,” Gosling said. “He was reminding everyone that he was just the tip of the iceberg – and that’s not just to be humble, that’s also true. So I don’t think that Neil viewed himself as an American hero. From my interviews with his family and people that knew him, it was quite the opposite. And we wanted the film to reflect Neil.”

Gosling also joked that since he’s Canadian, he “might have cognitive bias.”

First Man is directed by Academy Award-winning filmmaker Damien Chazelle, who previously helmed La La Land and Whiplash. and written by Oscar-winning Spotlight screenwriter Josh Singer. The film also stars Claire Foy, Kyle Chandler, Corey Stoll, and Jason Clarke. The film is set to be released October 12.
