Charges Against Michael Cohen Could Be Announced by End of August: CNN Report
Charges against former Trump lawyer Michael Cohen could be announced as soon as the end of the month, according to CNN.
CNN reports:
Federal prosecutors are preparing criminal charges against President Donald Trump’s former lawyer Michael Cohen and could announce them by the end of the month, people familiar with the matter tell CNN.
The US Attorney’s office for the Southern District of New York has been investigating Cohen for possible bank and tax fraud and campaign finance violations related in part to a $130,000 hush money payment made to silence porn star Stormy Daniels’ allegations of an affair with Trump. Trump has denied an affair.
Earlier on Sunday, the New York Times reported that Cohen is being investigated for bank fraud well in excess of $20 million.
According to the New York Times:
Federal authorities investigating whether President Trump’s former personal lawyer and fixer, Michael D. Cohen, committed bank and tax fraud have zeroed in on well over $20 million in loans obtained by taxi businesses that he and his family own, according to people familiar with the matter.
Investigators are also examining whether Mr. Cohen violated campaign finance or other laws by helping to arrange financial deals to secure the silence of women who said they had affairs with Mr. Trump. The inquiry has entered the final stage and prosecutors are considering filing charges by the end of August, two of the people said.
Any criminal charges against Mr. Cohen would deal a significant blow to the president. Mr. Cohen, 52, worked for the president’s company, the Trump Organization, for more than a decade. He was one of Mr. Trump’s most loyal and visible aides and called himself the president’s personal lawyer after Mr. Trump took office.
Responding to the report, MSNBC’s Ari Melber noted, “This reporting puts a big number on the size of Cohen’s potential financial crimes – $20 million – and reiterates a legal point concerning for Trump.”
The NYT article also speculated that it was a possibility that Cohen may opt to plead guilty rather than face an indictment.
