CNN’s John Berman Casts Doubt on Trump’s Media Praise: ‘Over and Over He has Attacked the Free Press’
On Friday, CNN’s John Berman responded to President Donald Trump‘s claims that journalists should be free “from the fear of being violently attacked” by rolling a montage of Trump’s repeated verbal attacks on the media.
During a public event at the White House held just one day after the Capital Gazette shooting, Trump said this: “Journalists, like all Americans, should be free from the fear of being violently attacked while doing their jobs. To the families of the victims there are no words to express our sorrow for your loss. Horrible, horrible event. Horrible thing happened.”
Trump’s comments did not sit well with many in the media, some which pointed out that as POTUS, Trump has gone as far as to call the press the “enemy of the people.”
On the air Friday night, Berman also noted that Trump was attacking the press as late as this week before airing footage of him blasting the media at a rally.
The CNN host then said, “We’re not suggesting the president isn’t sincere when he says journalists shouldn’t be violently attacked while during their job, but his repeated comments about journalism make it hard to believe what he said on Air Force One today.”
Berman then played the clip of Trump saying, “I have a lot of respect for the press. Tremendous — Some of the greatest people I know are reporters and people in the media.”
Berman then noted that “keeping them honest,” that does not seem to be the case.
“The president has been disrespecting journalists for years,” Berman continued on. “Now, he very well may think the TV hosts who endlessly praise him at a certain network are some of the greatest people he knows. But what about reporters doing actual reporting? Over and over he has attacked the free press.”
As further evidence, Berman then played a montage of Trump calling the press “scum,” “crooked” and “the worst.”
