On Friday night, Bill Maher faced off for the time against conservative commentator Ben Shapiro and had a heated discussion about civility (or lack there of) in America.

Maher began by asking Shapiro what he liked about the Trump presidency, which he cited things like the tax cuts and the Supreme Court nominees, but when asked what it would take for him to vote for a Democrat, Shapiro said he would if they would “stop being insane.”

“They would actually have to approach something like moderation in terms of policy,” Shapiro elaborated, “and also present a face that doesn’t look like people shouting down people at gas stations or entering restaurants and throwing them out.”

“Well if you’re talking about the civility thing, why don’t we start with the Republicans stop saying ‘Lock Her Up’?” Maher shot back. “Shouldn’t the civility argument start there before we care about who gets their entree?”

Shapiro then accused the left of caring about incivility “when it comes to Donald Trump” but not for someone like Rep. Maxine Waters (D-CA).

“Because Ben, you can’t walk into a room and see an elephant and a mouse and not know which one is bigger,” Maher responded.

“But it’s not an elephant and a mouse, it’s two elephants,” Shapiro said. “I needed 600 officers to protect me at Berkeley! Yes, it is an elephant and an elephant.”

Shapiro went on to cite Vice President Joe Biden when he accused then-presidential candidate Mitt Romney of “putting y’all back in chains” if elected.

“This stuff pre-existed Donald Trump,” Shapiro continued. “It came from the vice president when he was saying that Mitt Romney, the cleanest person ever, okay, was the guy who was gonna ‘put y’all back in chains.’ To pretend incivility started with Donald Trump-”

“I’m not talking bout incivility,” Maher interrupted. “I’m talking about the level of which it’s at,” something Shapiro agreed with.
