Russian President Vladimir Putin launched on Thursday night one of the largest attacks on Ukraine since the war began some three years ago, after speaking on the phone with President Donald Trump –– who has repeatedly called for an immediate end to the conflict.

Ukraine’s air force said Russia launched over 550 drones and missiles at Ukrainian cities overnight. The drones were primarily Iranian-made Shahed drones.

The Guardian’s Luke Harding reported on the Ukrainian fury in response to the attack. “As one Ukrainian adviser put it Putin is ‘publicly humiliating’ Donald Trump after their phone call yesterday. The US strategy of appeasing Russia doesn’t work,” Harding wrote.

Russia released a readout of Putin’s call with Trump on Thursday, which the Wall Street Journal’s Yaroslav Trofimov summed up, “Putin and Trump had a call, again. Per Russian readout, Trump called for a ceasefire, Putin said Russia first needs to achieve the goals of the “special military operation,” Trump didn’t object and then they talked about cooperation in promoting “traditional values” in movies.”

Trump has received harsh criticism for his approach to the ongoing Russian invasion of Ukraine, with critics arguing that Putin continues to play the president by making promises of de-escalation, followed by further military aggression.

The Wall Street Journal’s editorial board hammered the Trump administration earlier in the week for pausing weapons shipments to Ukraine. “The latest arms decision against Ukraine looks like another signal to Mr. Putin to continue the war. And why not? He can keep banking territorial gains while Mr. Trump keeps begging the dictator, pretty please, for a truce,” wrote the Journal in a scathing editorial.

Ukraine’s President Volodymyr Zelensky called the seven-hour air raid a “deliberate act of terror” which “immediately followed the call between Washington and Moscow.” Zelensky added that Putin’s attack was a “clear interpretation of how Moscow interprets diplomacy.”
