Zeteo founder Mehdi Hasan called out President Donald Trump and the Republican Party for their use of the phrase “This is what you voted for” in response to criticism on Wednesday.

Over the first few weeks of Trump’s second term, the president has talked about annexing both Canada and Greenland, in addition to expressing his interest in taking over the Gaza Strip.

In response to questions surrounding Trump’s decisions, members of the Republican Party have repeatedly said, “This is what you voted for.”

Appearing Wednesday on The ReidOut with Joy Reid, Hasan disagreed with that sentiment.

“So yeah, we ran this Data for Progress poll today, which shows seizing Greenland, majority of Americans surprisingly against,” HasaN said. “Seizing Canada, majority of Americans surprisingly against. Taking Gaza, annexing it, owning it — whatever he said — ‘I will own it,’ he told Fox, 64% of Americans are opposed. Amongst Republicans, [it’s] pretty split — 46-43. And when you ask them, ‘Do you want to send American troops to secure Gaza?’ 69% of Americans opposed — including a majority of Republicans. No one wants this.”

“And by the way, have you noticed, Joy, a lot of Republicans are running this very kind of ‘Trump is the state.’ ‘You can’t question him’ line. ‘He won the election. This is what people voted for.’ I keep hearing this line, ‘This is what people voted for.’ No, they didn’t,” he continued. “I don’t remember him on the campaign trail saying, ‘I’m going to take over Gaza.’ He didn’t promise it; and by the way, the American public don’t want it. So this is a lot of BS that’s being pushed that they are somehow popular, they have a mandate. They won by 1.5% in the popular vote. He didn’t win a majority of the popular vote. And yeah, he didn’t say he was going to do half the stuff he’s doing. I don’t remember war with Denmark being on the ballot paper last year.”
