Bill Maher Pushes Back On Guest Asking ‘Why’ No End Racism Sign At Super Bowl: ‘It Was Stupid To Begin With!’

By News Here - 11:07

Bill Maher pushed back on his guest asking “why get rid of” the long-standing “end racism” message in NFL end zones ahead of Sunday’s Super Bowl.

During a panel discussion with Rep. Byron Donalds (R-FL) and journalist Tara Palmeri on Friday’s Real Time, Maher cheered on the NFL scrapping their “end racism” message, which began to appear in 2020. The league quietly removed the message, but some critics pointed to President Donald Trump, who will be attending the big game, as the reason, including Maher.

“Why get rid of it?” Palmeri asked.

“It was stupid to begin with,” Maher said, arguing some spray-painted text on a field is not going to convince any racists to give up their racist ways.

Donalds suggested switching to a more generic message like “don’t be an asshole,” while Maher ripped Democrats for going too far with “cancel culture,” creating a “revolt” from some just looking to push buttons.

Check out the exchange below:

BILL MAHER: “I noticed a the Super Bowl, for the first time in I think four years now, the Trump administration is making them take away ‘end racism,’ which they had written in the end zone, right?”

TARA PALMERI: “But why? It just seems silly.”

MAHER: “To do it or not to do it?”

PALMERI: “Why get rid of it?”

MAHER: “Oh, I could tell you why. It was stupid to begin with.”

PALMER: “Yeah, but —”

MAHER: “Let me ask you, who is it for? And if you’re a racist and you see ‘end racism’ in the end zone, you’re going to stop being a racist?”

PALMERI: “The sentiment is basically ‘Don’t be an asshole'”

MAHER: “But I think it’s an asshole to nag us during the football game about something that doesn’t change anything. If I’m not a racist and I see it, it doesn’t matter. And if I am a racist, it’s just going to make me more of a racist.”

BYRON DONALDS: “I think if you write ‘Don’t be an asshole’ in the end zone, everyone would agree with that.”

MAHER: “The problem is we all think the other guy’s an asshole!”
