Mike Pence Reveals What He Said to Trump at Jimmy Carter’s Funeral After Not Seeing Each Other Since 2021
Former Vice President Mike Pence revealed Friday what he said to President-elect Donald Trump during their brief exchange at the Thursday funeral of Jimmy Carter.
The moment went viral on social media, as did Trump’s interactions (or lack thereof) with Former Presidents Barack Obama, George W. Bush, and Bill Clinton.
Bush ignored Trump as he took his seat at Washington National Cathedral but tapped Obama on the belly. Clinton also did not speak to Trump, nor did Vice President Kamala Harris or President Joe Biden.
Other than his lengthy chat with Obama, Trump briefly spoke to former Vice President Al Gore and Pence before he took his seat.
During a Friday conversation with Christianity Today, Pence revealed what he and Trump said to one another during what is believed to be their first conversation since the former certified Biden’s 2020 election win – drawing the ire of Trump and some supporters who quickly stormed the US Capitol. Some of those people would call for Pence’s hanging.
“He greeted me when he came down the aisle. I stood up, extended my hand. He shook my hand. I said, ‘Congratulations, Mr. President,’ and he said, ‘Thanks, Mike,’” Pence told the outlet’s editor-in-chief Russell Moore.
Pence also mentioned his wife Karen Pence did not interact with Trump prior to Thursday’s service.
“You’d have to ask my wife about her posture, but we’ve been married 44 years, and she loves her husband, and her husband respects her deeply,” he said. Pence also said he hoped shaking Trump’s hand would help him and the president-elect move away from “difficult days.” Christianity Today reported:

That’s certainly my hope.”
