MSNBC’s Rachel Maddow questioned why some of the country’s wealthiest tech billionaires were seated alongside President-elect Donald Trump’s cabinet nominees at Monday’s inauguration.

Upon seeing Apple CEO Tim Cook alongside Department of Homeland Security head nominee Kristi Noem, Maddow asked, “How is this happening in America?”

Days after former President Joe Biden declared he was concerned the country was becoming an oligarchy in his farewell address, some of the country’s wealthiest people coalesced around Trump ahead of his swearing-in. Just moments before Trump took his oath, an MSNBC camera caught Noem feet away from Cook.

Maddow, taken aback by the images, discussed the scene with MSNBC hosts Joy Reid and Alex Wagner:

MADDOW: Kristi Noem, the nominee for homeland security, next to Apple CEO Tim Cook. How is this happening in America?

How is this happening? Why are people with tons of money up on the dais with Cabinet nominees and family members?

WAGNER: It is a message.

REID: It is a message. And I think it and I think they are up there for the very reason that you probably think they’re up there.

MADDOW: It’s – it is a pivotal moment here. Jeff Bezos, the billionaire owner of The Washington Post and Amazon and that space company standing in front of RFK Junior, the wildly controversial nominee to be Health and Human Services secretary, one who, interestingly, has not yet had his confirmation hearing scheduled. A

WAGNER: And I believe that’s Sundar Pichai from Alphabet, right? In the middle as well.
