‘That’s Nonsense’: Mike Johnson Bristles at CBS’s Brennan Confronting Him as a 2020 ‘Election Denier’
House Speaker Mike Johnson’s (R-LA) conversation with CBS’ Margaret Brennan when she pressed him on his support for Donald Trump’s attempt to overturn the 2020 election results.
Brennan interviewed Johnson Sunday’s Face The Nation and eventually asked about Johnson’s support for a Texas lawsuit that sought to overturn the 2020 election results in key battleground states. Johnson has entertained Team Trump’s bizarre conspiracies about the election, and he has defended Trump’s election denialism despite the lack of evidence that the 2020 contest was corrupted by mass fraud.
Brennan noted that Johnson recruited other House Republicans to back the Texas lawsuit and informed him that “by CBS editorial standards [it] makes you an election denier.”
“That’s nonsense.” Johnson snapped in response.
“Can I get you on the record on that?” Brennan asked.
“I’ve always been consistent on the record,” he said. “Did you read the brief? Did you get a chance to read what we filed with the Supreme Court?”
Johnson accused Brennan of reading commentary about the brief but not the brief itself. Brennan responded by asking, “Do you recognize that President Biden won the 2020 election?”
His answer:
President Biden was certified as the winner of the election, he took the oath of office, he’s been the president for three years. What the argument that we presented to the court — which is our only avenue to do so — was that the Constitution was clearly violated in the 2020 election. It’s Article Two, Section One, and anyone can Google it and read it for themselves. The– the system by which you choose electors to elect the president of the United States must be done by the individual states and the system must be ratified the state legislatures. that is language, plain language in the Constitution
“So you still have issues with the validity of the 2020 election?” Brennan followed up. Johnson answered that “the Constitution was violated in the run up to the 2020 election,” when states changed their election laws in 2020 to deal with complications at the time from the coronavirus pandemic.
Johnson went on to criticize House Republican Conference chairwoman Liz Cheney slamming his enablement of Trump’s efforts to overturn the election. During this tangent, Johnson claimed that “At one point she even considered signing on to that [amicus brief]. I’ll tell you that that is a fact.”
As it were, Brennan also spoke with Cheney later on, who rejected Johnson’s claim that she considered backing the lawsuit.
