Charles Barkley Says He Lies About How Busy He Is To Skip Charity Events: ‘I Really Just Want To Golf And Fish’
The more famous Charles Barkley gets, the better the Hall-of-Famer has become at saying no.
“I’m never that busy,” Barkley said during the latest edition of The Pat McAfee Show. “I tell people I’m busy because one thing that happens from being in the lime light, people want you to do their shit all time.”
Barkley claimed that the number of charity requests he gets is overwhelming.
“I’m not even exaggerating, you get 30 to 40 requests for charity events every week. Everyone has a golf tournament, everyone has a dinner,” Barkley said. “After my fifth year of being in the lime light, I’m like, ‘These people think I aint got nothing better to do except their crap.'”
Barkley said he’s gotten so good at declining requests that his schedule is pretty wide open.
“I’m really not that busy because I really just want to play golf all the time and fish,” Barkley said.
“Everybody’s charity is important, but I can’t do it all! I want to have some time to be a normal person and play golf and fish. I understand charity is important,” Barkley added. “But you’re only one person, and I’m not going to work 365 days a year.”
Barkley added he’s so accustomed to saying no that he’s grown numb to it.
“I don’t even feel bad about lying anymore. ‘I just don’t have time right now, I got too much stuff going on.’ When I say, ‘too much stuff going on’ that means picking out a golf course I’m going to or picking out where I’m gonna go fishing,” Barkley said.
