Corey Stewart Boasts of Black Support, Hilariously Fails to Name a Single Black Leader Backing Him
Corey Stewart had an incredibly-tense chat with Al Sharpton last week about racial issues in America, but today, the GOP senate candidate for Virginia returned to MSNBC for Round 2. It didn’t go much better than it did the first time.
Stewart, who has been in the news a lot lately for reports on his extensive ties to white supremacists, argued that America has completely moved beyond racial issues. This drew a lot of pushback from Sharpton and Toure, particularly when Stewart said multiple times that “you guys are so obsessed” with race.
The three continued to spar about whether Stewart can effectively represent Virginia if he cannot acknowledge the sociopolitical issues minority groups have to contend with. Stewart stuck to his guns by saying “most Americans…don’t care that much about race,” which he characterized as a distraction from bigger matters.
Since Stewart insisted that he had plenty of support from black constituents, Sharpton decided to hone in on this, asking him to “name me the black leaders supporting you for the Senate.”
Stewart insisted that he has “a lot of people” behind him, but Sharpton wouldn’t let him dodge the question that easily.
“Name me one that’s supporting you…that knows about your great record and they’re supporting you for the Senate.”
Stewart giggled as he declined to answer the question, preferring to say (once again) that Sharpton is “stuck back in the 1960s” with his racial “obsession.” Toure took notice of this when he followed up with a monologue on how Donald Trump‘s presidency is proof that racial issues still exist in America, whether people like Stewart want to acknowledge it or not.
