Fans tuning in to the U.S. Open men’s tennis finals Sunday heard a chorus of boos aimed at President Donald Trump — despite the media being asked beforehand by the U.S. Tennis Association not to broadcast any “reactions” to the president.

As the crowd at Arthur Ashe Stadium stood for the National Anthem, loud boos could be heard over the music when the president’s face was shown on the big screen. Trump, seated alongside Attorney General Pam Bondi, was seen grinning amid the crowd reaction.

The reaction was different from what Trump traditionally receives at sporting events — but then, so too was the setting. The president is frequently met with cheers and chants of “U.S.A.” when he attends Ultimate Fighting Championship events, as well as college football games held in red states. Trump notably attended Alabama vs. Georgia game on Sept. 28, 2024, in Tuscaloosa, Alabama — where he drew heavy applause as he greeted fans.

An internal memo sent to media outlets, which was obtained by tennis reporter Ben Rothenberg, requested that broadcasters censor any “reactions” to Trump’s presence at the final between Jannik Sinner and Carlos Alcaraz. In spite of the memo, the boos could clearly be heard on ABC, which televised the match.

An excerpt of the letter read:

With respect to Broadcast Coverage, the President will be shown on the World Feed and the Ashe Court Feed during the opening anthem ceremony. We ask all broadcasters to refrain from showcasing any disruptions or reactions in response to the President’s attendance in any capacity, including ENG [Electronic News Gathering] coverage.

The last time Trump attended the U.S. Open championship was in Sept. 2015, when he was still a candidate for president. He was loudly booed by the crowd as he watched from The Trump Organization suite during a quarterfinal match between Venus and Serena Williams.
