NewsNation managed to top CNN and MSNBC in the advertiser-coveted 25-50 age demographic during several hours over the weekend, a big win for a relative newcomer in the cable news race.
On Saturday, September 12, NewsNation pulled ahead of CNN and MSNBC in multiple hours in the evening. A Special Report hosted by senior national correspondent Brian Entin on the death of conservative activist Charlie Kirk topped both MSNBC and CNN in the demo, according to Nielsen data. The overall ratings lagged behind CNN and MSNBC, but the special brought in 44,000 in the key demo, compared to 32,000 and 38,000 for MSNBC and CNN, respectively. The special was competing against CNN’s airing of Bill Maher’s Real Time and MSNBC’s The Weekend Primetime.
Overall, NewsNation’s Special Report drew 170,000 viewers compared to MSNBC’s 384,000 and CNN’s 548,000 in the same 8 p.m. hour.
NewsNation also managed key demo wins for the 7 p.m., 10 p.m., and 11 p.m. hours. Weekends typically hold softer ratings for networks. MSNBC even aired a repeat of Stephanie Ruhle’s The 11th Hour on Saturday. NewsNation’s Special Report managed around 10,000 more viewers in the 25-54 demo, but drew about half of Ruhle’s overall audience of 200,000.
The network lags behind in the overall ratings department, but the key demo wins are significant considering NewsNation has only been doing 24/7 news coverage since June 2024.
Fox News continues to dominate cable and digital ratings as the industry overall continues to struggle, and viewership is on the decline. MSNBC is facing a major change in the quickly-moving media landscape as it will be splitting off from NBC News next month, becoming MS NOW.
