House Majority Whip Tom Emmer (R-MN) said the U.S. economy is “roaring back” after a disappointing July jobs report and significant downward revisions in the numbers for May and June.

On Friday, the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics reported that the economy added just 73,000 jobs in July, well below expectations. Additionally, the BLS revised the job gains in May and June, stating that the economy added 258,000 fewer jobs than initially reported. President Donald Trump responded by baselessly claiming that the BLS commissioner “faked the jobs numbers” and fired her.

Emmer appeared on Saturday’s Fox Report, where Jon Scott asked the lawmaker to react to the employment data.

“There’s this criticism of the most recent jobs numbers,” Scott noted. “What do you think about the employment situation in this country? Is it going to continue to remain soft or is it going to come roaring back?”

“It’s starting to come roaring back,” Emmer replied before citing the massive Republican spending package Trump signed into law last month. That bill extends the 2017 tax cuts, which were set to expire this year. The legislation will also cut an estimated $911 billion from Medicaid over the next 10 years. “One of the biggest things that we did in that bill was we set permanent tax policy with the exception of no taxes on tips, no taxes on overtime, no taxes on Social Security, and an increase in the child tax credit, Jon. All we did was make permanent the tax policy of the last seven years.”

Emmer went on to say that investors had been “sitting on the sidelines” and waiting for economic clarity, which, he said, they now have.

“You watch that capital get deployed on new projects and new opportunities for all Americans,” he concluded.

According to a Marist poll last month, inflation and Trump’s tariffs are Americans’ top economic concerns heading into the summer, with 81% stating that they are very concerned or somewhat concerned about the tariffs’ impact on their finances.
