Fox News legal analyst Paul Mauro urged caution over the court-authorized FBI raid on former National Security Adviser John Bolton’s home, arguing that it won’t necessarily lead to an arrest.

CNN reported that the raid took place over the issue of whether Bolton “disclosed classified information in his 2020 book.”

Mauro, an attorney and former NYPD inspector, told the rest of Friday’s Outnumbered panel that the case may be referred to a grand jury for an indictment if the FBI finds probable cause for an arrest.

“You get the grand jury indictment and then you go forward. None of that is guaranteed here — I want to be clear,” Mauro said. “So, this is there to safeguard against a fishing expedition.”

Mauro continued:

All I would say is this: We don’t know what the derivation of this was yet. They could have been looking at something completely different and encountered this, and said, ‘Wait a minute? John Bolton’s name is coming up in this?’ Because it reportedly is coming out of the CIA world. [John] Ratcliffe apparently said, ‘OK, you can go with some of this evidence.’ That gives me pause.

I think we should keep our powder try to see what this goes. We’re going to hear further, at some point the documents will come out. And then we’ll see what it is is there. All I can say, we know there is a lot of big stuff coming. You’ve been hearing about Comey, we’ve been hearing about McCabe, we’ve been hearing about Brennan —all the names relative to ‘Russiagate.’ I hope this is not a low-level thing that in some way, shape, or form diminishes importance of what I think will be earth-shattering cases coming in the future.

Bolton left the administration under nebulous circumstances in 2019, with Trump saying he fired his national security adviser, and Bolton claiming he resigned. Since then, Bolton has been an outspoken Trump critic, which has led some to speculate that the raid was ordered out of retaliation.

Trump said Friday that he had no knowledge about the raid beforehand.
