‘Just Vague Assurances’: Fox’s Howard Kurtz Says It’s ‘Clear’ Trump-Putin Summit Didn’t Accomplish Much

By News Here - 15:07

Fox News host Howard Kurtz joined with the media chorus Sunday claiming that President Donald Trump walked away from the Alaska summit with Vladimir Putin without much to show for it.

Earlier Sunday, Trump decried some of the reporting on Friday’s summit that was meant to broker a ceasefire between Russia and Ukraine.

“It’s incredible how the Fake News violently distorts the TRUTH when it comes to me. There is NOTHING I can say or do that would lead them to write or report honestly about me,” Trump posted to social media. “I had a great meeting in Alaska on Biden’s stupid War, a war that should have never happened!!!”

That didn’t stop Kurtz from giving his take on Media Buzz a few hours later.

“After the meeting, despite upbeat talk it was clear not much was accomplished,” Kurtz said. “No ceasefire, no details, no questions from the press. Just vague assurances that some progress was made without explaining what that was.”

Kurtz then gave Trump credit for not overselling “what happened, or more precisely, what didn’t happen.”

Kurtz went on to say that the media reaction to the Alaska session “varied sharply, but much was negative.”

He played clips of CNN’s John King saying, “He went for a ceasefire and leaves with nothing.”

Jen Psaki on MSNBC claimed, “The big winner of today’s summit…was undoubtedly Vladimir Putin.”

And Fox’s Bret Baier complained about not being able to ask the two leaders any questions.

“This joint news conference was anything but,” Baier said. “It was not a news conference, there were no questions taken by either leader. There were many yelled by reporters there. But we don’t have a sense of what exactly is in the agreement or deal.”

Kurtz asked guest Rich Lowry with National Review if it was a “setback” for Trump, since “the coverage was heavily negative, even from some of those that ordinarily support the president.”

Lowry said he was taking a wait-and-see approach.

“The media coverage always tends to be, ‘This is stupid and doomed to fail,’ and often, there’s a method to the madness and Trump ends up getting to where he wants to go,” he said.
