Attorney General Pam Bondi expressed skepticism that President Donald Trump will seek a third term in office — but wavered on the question of whether he legally can.

The topic has been a hot one since last Sunday — when the president told NBC that he believes “there are methods” by which he would be able to run in 2028. The 22nd Amendment would seem to prohibit Trump from serving beyond January 2029. It states: “No person shall be elected to the office of the President more than twice.”

In the days following his initial comment, the president and White House staffers have been coy about the prospect of Trump seeking another term. On Fox News Sunday, anchor Shannon Bream tried to pin Bondi down on the question of whether Trump can legally pursue a fourth straight Oval Office bid.

“There’s chatter about President Trump seeking a third term,” Bream said. “He has said, ‘there are methods.’ Is this just one of his epic trolls? Or does he or do you believe there is a method — short of amending the Constitution — by which he could seek a third term?

Bondi, at first, seemed to dismiss the prospect.

“President Trump has served one full term,” she said. “He’s on his second full term. He’s a very smart man, and I wish we could have him for 20 years as our president,But I think he’s gonna be finished probably after this term.”

Bream, though, was taken aback by one particular word in Bondi’s response.

“Probably?!” Bream said.

And that was when Bondi began to waffle.

“Well, the Constitution … we’d have to look at the Constitution,” Bondi said.

“It would a heavy lift on whether you get two-thirds of the Senate and House to go along with you, but is the concession that that’s really the only way to do it?” Bream asked.

Bondi would not confirm that the method Bream spelled out is the only one by which Trump could run again.

“It’d be a heavy lift,” she said — not elaborating further.
