Barstool Sports founder Dave Portnoy told CNN he’s open to voting for a Democrat in upcoming midterm elections if the stock market continues tumbling amid President Donald Trump’s tariffs.

Portnoy joined CNN’s Dana Bash on Inside Politics on Wednesday to discuss his recent viral videos where he’s revealed that after Trump imposed his tariffs, he’s lost millions in the stock market. Portnoy said he believes he’s down close to $20 million as stocks have been hit with uncertainty amid the tariffs.

Portnoy is a Trump voter and said he’s willing to give the president time to see if the tariff strategy works. The Barstool Sports founder acknowledged that Trump has long touted tariffs so his recent move should not have come as a major surprise.

“I don’t think I realized there’d be a market crash,” he said.

Portnoy did accuse administration officials, including Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent, of downplaying how much of an issue the current state of the economy is.

“I’m willing to still give him time. I think the big date is the midterms, which is a long time out,” he said. “But I do think that in this country, the number one issue, no matter what is going on, is the economy. And if the stock market doesn’t show some signs of rebound or rebounding by then, I think people will speak with their vote.”

Bash asked Portnoy if he would consider moving away from Republicans in the midterms, and the Barstool founder said he would “absolutely” be open to it, saying he was pushed to the right. If the stock market finds a bottom and evens out, Portnoy claimed, he’ll give Trump and Republicans more time, but if it continues being a daily hit all the way through next year, then he won’t.

Portnoy said:

One thing about me, which drives me crazy, I voted for Trump, I support him, I was never like some crazy MAGA guy,” Portnoy said. “Like, I look at each candidate and I choose who I like. I think the left and a lot of even what they did with, I want to say, hiding Biden’s mental state, not having a primary, really drove me to the right. So I am not somebody who would just strictly vote based on Republican or Democrat. I vote on the people running how I think they speak to me, the issues that are important to me. But yes, I will vote how I feel is the best interest of what I believe in.
