‘Next in Line’: Dem Rep. Agrees with MSNBC Host That Trump Will ‘Whisk Away’ Any ‘People of Color’ After Abrego Garcia
MSNBC host Symone Sanders-Townsend on Saturday said that recent deportations to El Salvador are just the beginning, and that any “people of color” across America are going be “next in line.”
On MSNBC’s The Weekend, Maryland Democrat Rep. Glenn Ivey joined Sanders-Townsend and Michael Steele to discuss topics including the case of Kilmar Abrego Garcia, the citizen of El Salvador who resided in Ivey’s district until President Donald Trump and his administration deported him, despite an immigration court previously granting withholding of his removal.
Sanders-Townsend began by referencing an article by Legal Defense Fund’s Janai Nelson at The Nation and saying to Ivey that Democracies die “brick by brick” through individual actions. She said that the “lawlessness” of the administration in such actions are “canaries in the coal mine, gasping for air.”
“If they could do it to them,” Sanders-Townsend said, “they will do it to any of us.”
“And to be very clear, it’s going to be the people of color and vulnerable communities that are next in line,” she added.
The congressman agreed.
“That’s certainly part of why the African-American community is so strongly behind the supporting Kilmar,” he said. “If they’re going to whisk them away, what are they going to do with us?”
SANDERS-TOWNSEND: The realistic way in which democracies die is that it’s dismantled brick by brick, piece by piece. And she says that what we are seeing now with the lawlessness from this administration are really the canaries in the coal mine gasping for air. I’m paraphrasing here.
But to me, that is why Kilmar Abrego Garcia’s specific case, the case of the gentleman who’s a make-up artist out of California who was also sent to that prison. And that is why the more, the 75% of the folks who have been sent, the men who have been sent there that don’t have criminal records — that is why this is so important.
Because if they could do it to them, if they can snatch students off the street without any pushback or recourse, they will do it to any of us. And to be very clear, it’s going to be the people of color and vulnerable communities that are next in line.
IVEY: I think that’s right, and that’s certainly part of why the African-American community is so strongly behind the supporting Kilmar.
SANDERS-TOWNSEND: Yeah, we’re like, we are not for this.
IVEY: Yeah, because as you just said, if they’re going to whisk them away, what are they going to do with us?
