New Poll Shows Growing Gender Gap in Support for Harris and Trump

By News Here - 13:08

A new poll shows the gender gap between supporters of former President Donald Trump and Vice President Kamala Harris is growing now that both parties have officially named their nominees.

The Washington Post/ABC News/Ipsos poll was conducted August 23 to 27, 2024 with an online survey via the probability-based Ipsos KnowledgePanel® in both English and Spanish, among a random national sample of 2,496 U.S. adults, according to the polling memo. The partisan breakdown was 29 percent Democrats, 29 percent Republicans, 30 percent independents, and the entire sample had a margin of error of +/- 2 percentage points.

The poll showed that neither candidate had a post-convention bounce, and Robert F. Kennedy Jr.’s endorsement of Trump was statistically insignificant.

Harris led Trump 50 percent to 46 percent in the national sample, with that lead widening to 52 percent to 46 percent among likely voters.

Where there had been a notable post-convention shift was in the divide between male and female voters, specifically white men and women. As the CNN panel on Inside Politics with Dana Bash highlighted, Harris still had a slight lead, but the gender gap between the two candidates’ support was increasing.

Pre-c0nvention, Trump was +13 with both white men and women, but after the Democratic National Convention, those numbers diverged sharply. According to the poll, Trump was now only +2 with white women — a statistical tie within the margin of error — but had grown his lead with white men to +21.

“The gender gap there is just incredibly clear,” said CNN White House correspondent Arlette Saenz, adding that both the Harris and Trump campaigns were making plays for women voters, with the vice president’s campaign viewing issues like reproductive rights and gun violence meaning “they have more room to grow” with these voters.

Anchor Dana Bash brought up another finding in the poll regarding which candidate voters preferred for certain attributes, noting that Harris came out far ahead in physical health for the job (+32), honesty and trustworthiness (+18), and mental acuity (+10).

“What a different race we were looking at than when Joe Biden was the candidate,” said CNN senior reporter Edward-Isaac Dovere. He added that it looked like abortion “will continue to be a big issue” and Harris was “a powerful messenger on that,” as well as the Democrats continuing to put “so much focus on that issue,” like the multiple speakers at the DNC.

Trump did have the advantage on several issues, although Harris had improved on Biden’s numbers on these topics. Trump was the preferred candidate on the economy (+8), inflation (+8), and immigration (+9), with Harris preferred on abortion (+16).
