Psaki Defends New CDC Mask Guidance at Briefing: ‘We’re Still in the Midst of a Once-in-a-Generation Pandemic’
Reporters at Tuesday’s White House press briefing questioned Jen Psaki on the CDC decision to revise mask mandates again.
The Centers for Disease Control is expected to announce a reversal and recommend that some vaccinated people wear masks indoors, given concerns about the spread of the Delta variant.
During the briefing, Psaki was asked whether President Joe Biden talking a few weeks ago about the U.S. declaring “independence” from the virus was premature, and on how difficult it would be to get vaccinated Americans to mask up.
Psaki said the CDC would address the matter in full later, before saying, “We’re still in the midst of a once-in-a-generation pandemic battling an ever-evolving virus.”

She brought up previous warnings about the Delta variant from White House health officials and how “we are dealing with a much different strain of this virus.”
The CDC, Psaki said, is looking at “evolving information, evolving data,” and providing the best possible guidance.

Asked at another point about “Americans who are feeling whiplash right now,” Psaki responded, “Our goal is to save their lives, and our responsibility and the responsibility of public health officials is to continue to provide updated guidance.”

When asked why vaccinated people need to mask up now at all, she said, “The public health leaders in our administration have made the determination, based on data, that that is a way to make sure they’re protected, their loved ones are protected.”
