Flake Says ‘Not a Chance’ He’d Ask for Kavanaugh Probe if He Was Seeking Re-Election
Sen. Jeff Flake joined Sen. Chris Coons for a joint interview on 60 Minutes on Sunday to talk about the dramatic events that led to the Kavanaugh FBI probe.
During his sit-down with CBS’s Scott Pelley, the outgoing Senator admitted that he would have never have been able to push for a probe into the Brett Kavanaugh allegations if he had planned to run for re-election.
“No, not a chance,” Flake said when asked if he would have asked for the probe if he wanted to keep his seat.
Pelley then asked if it was because politics has become too “sharp, too partisan.”
“There’s no value to reaching across the aisle,” Flake continued on. “There’s no currency for that anymore. There’s no incentive.”
On Friday, Flake — who had previously announced that he would vote for Kavanaugh’s confirmation — called for an FBI investigation into the Kavanaugh allegations after being confronted in the elevator by sexual assault survivors and speaking with his friend, Democratic Senator Coons prior to the Judiciary Committee vote.
His request ultimately led to the White House ordering a time-limited FBI probe into the allegations made against the Supreme Court nominee.
