Ari Melber on Shepard Smith’s Caravan Fact-Checking: You Have a Problem When Your Message Is ‘Grilled by Your Own Side’
MSNBC host Ari Melber gave Shep Smith a shout-out on his show tonight after the Fox News anchor “grilled” his colleagues — specifically Sean Hannity — for their coverage of the migrant caravan story.
“Trump’s closing argument is on defense. In red states, for red states, with talk of immigration orders that he doesn’t have the power to order and ploys like sending troops to the border this week before the midterms for a caravan that is two months away,” Melber said during a segment on Trump’s dwindling clout in the GOP. “A fact check so glaring it even occurred within the confines of Fox News.”
A clip of Hannity claiming that “a highly organized, motivated, and undocumented trove of migrants [is] headed straight to the United States as we speak” then played, before Melber showed a segment of Smith essentially fact checking his opinion host colleague.
“The migrants, according to Fox News reporting, are more than two months away. If any of them actually come here. But tomorrow is one week before the midterm election,” Smith said yesterday afternoon. “Which is what all of this is about. There is no invasion. No one is coming to get you. There’s nothing at all to worry about.”
“When your red meat message is getting grilled by your own side, you may have a problem,” Melber said in response to the two segments. “And when you’re one of the world’s most well known self-promoters and you’re spending millions of dollars on ads so you can hide in plain sight, well you may know you have a problem.”
Smith has a history of going viral for segments where he debunks claims made by Fox News opinion hosts. His reporting style has caused him to butt heads with Hannity and other prime time hosts who have taken offense to Smith’s comments about them.
