On Sunday, former FBI director James Comey took to Twitter to stress truth “matters.”
“Truth exists and truth matters,” Comey wrote. “Truth has always been the touchstone of our country’s justice system and political life. People who lie are held accountable. If we are untethered to truth, our justice system cannot function and a society based on the rule of law dissolves.”

Comey did not indicate the reason for his tweet. However, his statements contradict a notion about truth made by Donald Trump‘s lawyer Rudy Giuliani earlier in the day on Meet the Press.
Giuliani’s meme-worthy remarks came after Chuck Todd said this to Giuliani: “And when you tell me that he should testify because he’s going to tell the truth and he shouldn’t worry, well that’s so silly because that’s somebody’s version of the truth, not the truth.”
In response, Giuliani said: “Truth isn’t truth.”
Giuliani’s words quickly spread through the internet and prompted a strong reaction from many, including, it appears, Comey, who has used his Twitter account for similar digs in the past.
