Conservative X users are skewing The New York Times over a story claiming Zohran Mamdani — the self-identified Democratic Socialist frontrunner in the New York City mayoral race — is not an actual socialist.

The Times’ story, published on Saturday and written by political reporter Jeffery C. Mays, includes a quote from former Gov. Andrew Cuomo that says “New York City people are not socialists.”

“Neither, actually, is Mr. Mamdani: He is a democratic socialist, which means his beliefs are similar to those of socialists but not exactly the same,” Mays wrote immediately after. “He is a member of both the national Democratic Socialists of America and its local New York City chapter.”

Mays’ story added that “the closest Mr. Mamdani gets to socialism is in his belief in treating people more equitably.”

Critics of the story were quick to point out several of Mamdani’s ideas fit the classic definition of socialism, including; public control of utilities, city-owned grocery stores, and free public transit.

Those above sections caught the eyes of many right-leaning X users, who called BS on The Times attempting to paint Mamdani as a non-socialist.

“NYT article tries to argue that Democratic Socialists of America member Zohran Mamdani is not actually a socialist & that democratic socialism is not actually socialism (hint: yes he is & yes it is),” posted Jerry Dunleavy IV, a reporter for the conservative outler Just The News. “In fact, as I’ve laid out before (next tweet) Mamdani is obviously a Communist.”

And there were plenty of other posts like that. Here are a few examples:

And on Sunday morning, NYC Mayor Eric Adams showed he did not agree with the hometown paper’s assessment. Adams said his competitor is looking to “turn New York City into a laboratory for socialist experiments,” complete with an AI-generated picture of Mamdani in a lab coat and holding a green elixir.

Cuomo’s former top aide Melissa DeRosa also called out the NYT story on Sunday, noting on X that “Mamdani previously told conference attendees not to compromise on ‘seizing the means of production.'”

The Times’ story and the revulsion to it comes a week after Mamdani was mocked for failing to benchpress 135 pounds.

House Majority Whip Tom Emmer (R-MN) struggled to explain why he voted against a bipartisan bill promoting mental health services in an effort to stop gun violence — even as he argued that the Minneapolis Catholic school shooter was mentally ill.

Emmer was questioned by ABC’s Martha Raddatz on ABC’s This Week.

“You talk about what can be done,” Raddatz began. “After mass shootings in Buffalo and in Uvalde, Texas. Congress passed the bipartisan Safer Communities Act. It provided hundreds of millions of dollars for schools to expand mental health services, enhance safety measures. You did not vote for that bill. Why?” she asked.

Emmer seemed peeved by the line of questioning.

“I don’t remember the reasons that I didn’t vote for that bill,” Emmer answered. “I gotta tell you, we did a lot for Uvalde. But you can’t replace those children, Martha. You can’t. And you can’t help that community. We’re talking about getting on the front end, Martha, we’re talking about — we need to have the resources —”

Raddatz interrupted, saying, “This bill sounds like it might’ve done that.”

“We need to get to the root cause,” Emmer continued. “Martha. Okay, that would have done that? That would have identified this young man’s mental health condition? This would have actually identified him as a danger to himself and the community before this ever happened? No, that’s the part that we’ve got to identify.”

Emmer posted to X the day after the shooting to link Gov. Tim Walz’s (D-MN) support of Minnesota’s “Trans Refuge” law with the tragedy that took the lives of two young children.

The law, that took effect in 2023, “prevents out-of-state laws from interfering in the practice of gender-affirming health care” in Minnesota.

“Instead of helping solve the mental health crisis in Minnesota, Tim Walz and the DFL [Minnesota Democratic–Farmer–Labor Party] have exacerbated it with their ‘trans refuge’ law. They should repeal it immediately.”

Not all Democratic politicians are opposed to President Donald Trump using the National Guard to crack down on crime.

Chicago Alderman Raymond Lopez (D) said he is “absolutely” in favor of the president deploying the military to The Windy City in order to thwart lawlessness, before adding he has a “real hard time accepting” his fellow party members who are opposed to the idea.

“Chicagoans want to feel safe in the city of Chicago,” Lopez told Fox News. “They want to know that they can leave their homes and come back safely, they could go to work, they could sit on their front steps, [and] their kids can go to school without being shot at.”

Lopez shared his thoughts during a brief segment on Fox News Live on Saturday afternoon. The 47-year-old Democrat told Fox correspondent Rich Edson he would love to see the Trump Administration deploy the National Guard to Chicago, just like he did recently in Washington, D.C., because he is sick of seeing teenagers shot dead in his community.

“So when I hear my Democratic colleagues tell me, ‘Don’t worry, crime is down — Trump, stay home in Washington,’ I have a real hard time accepting that,” Lopez continued.

He added his city has “always coordinated” with the federal government and federal agencies, like the FBI and DEA, to combat crime. The only thing that has changed now, though, is that Trump is in charge — and that is why Democrats are opposed to it, according to Lopez.

“All of a sudden, now we don’t want to work with them — but we still want their grant money,” Lopez said. “So there’s a serious disconnect in what’s going on here on the ground. But overwhelmingly, anything that helps bring peace — as we saw, increase public safety in Washington, D.C. over the past 30 days — they want that here as well.”

Lopez’s comments come a few weeks after the Trump Administration deployed the National Guard to the nation’s capital. That move helped propel President Trump to his best approval rating ever, at least according to one major poll this week. The move has also earned major pushback from critics.

Chicago Mayor Brandon Johnson is among the Democrats who does not agree with Lopez. Earlier on Saturday, Johnson signed an executive order that called for his city to resist National Guard troops and “militarized immigration enforcement.”

Charlamagne tha God berated former Democratic National Committee Chair Jaime Harrison on Friday, criticizing him for his decision not to push former President Joe Biden to drop out of the 2024 election.

Harrison joined Charlamagne, comedian Jess Hilarious, and producer RaaShaun Casey (known as DJ Envy) on their radio show The Breakfast Club to discuss Harrison’s career after the DNC and the state of American politics.

Casey began to ask Harrison about the DNC’s role in influencing the choice of the Democratic presidential nominee before being cut off by the former chair.

“So there was always rumor that the DNC were the ones that, you know, quote unquote, picked who they wanted to be–” began Casey.

“Man, that’s a bunch of baloney,” shot back Harrison.

Charlemagne took issue with his statement saying, “Stop it, Jamie. That’s not baloney.”

The group spoke over each other, Charlemagne told Harrison, “You can tell the truth!”

The conversation continued:

HARRISON: Well, I am telling the truth. Tell me the power I have to pick? If I’m the DNC
chair, what power do I have to pick? Like people said, “well, you could have told Joe Biden to not run.” Like seriously?

CHARLEMAGNE: Yeah.

CASEY: Yeah.

CHARLEMAGNE: You could have said that.

HARRISON: I could’ve and–

CASEY: Nobody was against it during that time.

CHARLEMAGNE: You could have and should have.

HARRISON: I could have. And do you think he would have listened? This is the most powerful– no, Charlemagne–

CHARLEMAGNE: Time out. To your point, somebody did listen– he did listen to somebody finally. So everybody should have told him earlier, yes.

HARRISON: I think ultimately what the president saw was that this fight is actually tearing the party apart, and I don’t want that to be on me.

CHARLEMAGNE: Stop it, Jamie. You don’t– you’re not beholden to them no more.

HARRISON: No, it’s not about being beholden to them. I’m telling the truth.

CHARLEMAGNE: That man was too old. Everybody knew he was too old. He should have been a transitional president from the beginning.

HARRISON: Charlemagne, I get all of that. But you know what? Somebody should have stepped up. If people thought that Joe Biden was too old, then some real people should have stepped up and said, “You know what? I’m going to run.”

[CROSSTALK]

CHARLEMAGNE: But then they get their ass handed to them.

JESS HILARIOUS: What does that look like with no support?

CHARLEMAGNE: When a Dean Phillips does that y’all kick him out.

HARRISON: Look, is Dean Phillips serious?

CHARLEMAGNE: It don’t matter. No, Jamie, you’re acting like that is the normal process of things. Yes, just challenge the sitting president. You know y’all crucify people for that.

HARRISON: Well, what you telling me, you saying, “Well, that’s not normal.” And you saying, “Is it normal for the DNC chair to say, Mr. President, you need to sit down?”

CHARLEMAGNE: Yes. In that situation, yes.

HARRISON: No, no, it is not!

CHARLEMAGNE: If George Clooney can say it, if Charlamagne tha God can say it, if all of you people who not in politics can say it, but y’all– Jake Tapper’s book, I read the book, said President Biden walked up to you, shook your hand, didn’t even know who you were.

HARRISON: That’s a bunch of bullshit. That’s a bunch of bullshit.

CHARLEMAGNE: I don’t believe that, Jamie.

HARRISON: Well, why don’t you believe me?

[CROSSTALK]

CASEY: So what happened for people who don’t know what happened?

CHARLEGMAGNE: He said that– Jake Tapper and Alex Thompson wrote in their book Original Sin that Biden shook DNC Chair, at the time, Jamie Harrison’s hand and didn’t recognize who he was, and Jamie said he was lying.

HARRISON: I said that was bullshit because it was bullshit.

Harrison went on to say, “Yes. I mean he was damn old. But when you take a look at it, Charlemagne, when you look at what this man was trying to do, I’d rather take an old Joe Biden on a respirator right now than a goddamn Donald Trump right now who’s destroying this country.”

Charlegmane pointed out how that type of logic led to the election of Donald Trump.

“That type of rhetoric is exactly why y’all lost,” said Charlegmane. “And what I mean by that is America shouldn’t have to choose between a Donald Trump and an old man on a respirator. I shouldn’t have to choose between authoritarian regime, an authoritarian strategy, and an old man on a respirator.

“But Charlamagne, you can’t win something if you don’t have somebody in the contest to run against,” Harrison fired back.

“And if Joe Biden would have said, ‘Hey, I’m gonna be a transitional president. I’m only going to be here for four years,’ that would have gave you as DNC chair and the party a whole lot of time to pick a good candidate,” added Charlegmane.

Harrison responded, “But he didn’t, right?”

“He didn’t,” Charlegmane agreed.

“If I was 6’5 or 6’10, I’d be playing basketball right now and a million-dollar house. But I don’t, right? So that did not happen. So when that did not happen, then what you got to do is play with the cards– it’s like you playing spades, right?” said Harrison. “Man, if I would have gotten, you know, a deuce here and this and that, then I could have won that hand. Yo, you play with a hand that you dealt with, right? And so in the end of the day, Joe Biden decided to run. Nobody decided, of significance decided to challenge him. So, therefore, that is the horse that you have to ride.”

First up, we have the Odyssey G9 OLED model, which sports a QD-OLED panel for perfect black levels and sharp contrast, a 5120x1440 resolution (the equivalent of two 1440p monitors next to each other), and it has a 240Hz refresh rate, making it excellent for gaming. In my experience playing games like Overwatch 2, ultrawide monitors are genuinely more useful for the extra peripheral vision. The 1800R curvature brings the sides of the display closer to you, without feeling overwhelmed by the monitor.

Right now, the OLED model is down to $900 from its usual $1,600. It's not the first time it's gone on sale, but it's only the second time I've seen it this low.

Next, there's the LCD version of the Odyssey G9. This display is substantially similar to the above model, with the same 49" ultrawide display, same 5120x1440 resolution, and same 240Hz refresh rate for smooth gaming. The most notable difference is its LCD panel, which doesn't quite get the same perfect black levels as OLED, but is also quite a bit cheaper.

One other key difference is the curvature. At 1000R, this monitor is significantly more curved than the OLED version. Whether that's a good thing can be subjective, but it means the sides of the monitor are even closer to you. Depending on how you use it, this can mean less eye strain when looking at the sides of the monitor, but it can also feel a bit overwhelming for some people.

The LCD version is down to $700 from a normal price of $1,000. This is the first time I've ever seen this particular monitor drop this low, so it's a better time than ever to grab one.

Mexico’s political leaders ended up in a literal shoving match on the Mexican Senate floor as one demanded time to speak from the podium.

Senator Alejandro Moreno , who leads the opposition Institutional Revolutionary Party (PRI), can be seen in a video posted to social media moving behind the Senate podium to confront Gerardo Fernández Noroña , the president of the Senate. In the video, Moreno pushes Noroña multiple times and hits him in the neck. Noroña responds by pushing back, as another individual tried to come in between the politicians, only for Moreno to toss him to the ground.

Tensions in the Senate were running high as lawmakers debated the United States military coming into the country to help deal with Mexican drug cartels. Moreno was demanding a chance for his side to speak up on the issue. The Senate leader will now call for an emergency session to propose expelling Moreno and others who were involved in the physical incident.

Moreno took to X and accused Noroña of starting the fight.

“He was the one who started the attack; he did it because he couldn’t silence us with arguments,” Moreno wrote.

The Senate leader also reposted a favorable political ad that included footage from the shoving match.

Moreno claimed the Senate president made the first physical contact, and he did so out of “cowardice.”

“That cowardice provoked what came next. Let it be clear: the first physical aggression came from Noroña. He threw the first shove, and he did it out of cowardice. Morena broke the Chamber’s agreement, and Noroña was exposed in his baseness,” the lawmaker wrote. “What happened is not an isolated incident or an accident: it’s part of Morena’s strategy to impose silence and control. That’s how their servile followers act, like Fernández Noroña, with shouts, tricks, and violence.”

Powered by the Google Tensor G2 chip and a 4,821 mAh battery, it’s not as fast or long-lasting as more recent models like the Pixel 9 Pro Fold, but it still performs well for everyday use. Since this is a 2023 release, productivity features also won’t be as refined, but at a significantly lower price, it still offers plenty of value and has gained a loyal following. The first phone’s wide "book style" and wider aspect ratio may also be more comfortable for some users to type on compared to newer releases, which are a bit narrower.

The phone is lightweight and slim, at approximately half an inch thick when closed, but highly durable thanks to a sturdy hinge, a Gorilla Glass Victus coating, and an IPX8 water-resistance rating, meaning it can be immersed in water for up to half an hour. CNN Senior Justice Correspondent Evan Perez incorrectly claimed semi-automatic guns can “shoot dozens of bullets in just one trigger pull” — and a number of X users were quick to point out his firearm flub.

“These things can shoot dozens of bullets, you know, in just one trigger pull, right? And so what happens in this case is, sometimes they have enough time to to reload,” Perez told Pamela Brown. “It’s one of the most horrific things for students to be sitting there. You saw this in Uvalde, you see this in Newtown, repeatedly, where a shooter has enough time to reload. And the horrific nature of this is, you know, for little kids to be facing this.”

Perez’s bogus comment followed the deadly attack on a Minneapolis Catholic church on Wednesday morning that killed two children and injured 17 other people, including 14 kids.

Semi-automatic weapons — rather than shooting dozens of bullets per trigger pull — shoot one bullet per trigger pull.

Minneapolis Police Chief Brian O’Hara, during a press briefing, said the male shooter was armed with a rifle, a shotgun, and a pistol when he was found dead from a self-inflicted gunshot.

Steve Guest, a former communications advisor for Sen. Ted Cruz (R), shared a clip of Perez’s comment to X soon afterwards.

“That is factually inaccurate,” Guest said. “A semi-automatic rifle fires one bullet per pull of the trigger. False anti-gun fear mongering during breaking news is sick.”

A number of other right-leaning X accounts shared their displeasure with Perez as well.

“Fake news using a tragedy to push lies about how guns work. Disgusting,” Libs of TikTok posted.

The Patriot Oasis, which has nearly 300,000 followers on Elon Musk’s platform, said “CNN is fear-mongering at the expense of children’s lives.”

Nick Fondacaro, an editor for NewsBusters, ripped Perez as well, saying he was “either intentionally lying or you’re speaking in complete ignorance. Neither of which are becoming of a journalist.”
