President Donald Trump clarified his stance as to what media he regards to be “enemy of the people” — but the clarification differs negligibly from the commonly reported definition.

In a Monday evening tweet, the president argued that he has not referred to all media as “enemy of the people,” but rather, the “Fake News (Media).”

“CNN and others in the Fake News Business keep purposely and inaccurately reporting that I said the ‘Media is the Enemy of the People.’ Wrong!” Trump wrote. “I said that the ‘Fake News (Media) is the Enemy of the People,’ a very big difference. When you give out false information – not good!”

In a subsequent tweet, Trump added to his argument:

Check out tweets from last two days. I refer to Fake News Media when mentioning Enemy of the People – but dishonest reporters use only the word “Media.” The people of our Great Country are angry and disillusioned at receiving so much Fake News. They get it, and fully understand!

Why is this clarification largely pointless? In a 2017 tweet, the president specified which outlets he deems to be part of the fake news media.

The FAKE NEWS media (failing @nytimes, @NBCNews, @ABC, @CBS, @CNN) is not my enemy, it is the enemy of the American People!

Trump, in that tweet, identified ABC, CBS, CNN, NBC, and The New York Times as fake news media. So, in other words, he does not think the entire media is part of the fake news media. Just the three major networks, one of the big three cable news channels, and America’s most prominent newspaper.
