WATCH: Jordan Spieth Nearly Falls Into Lake Michigan After One of the Most Insane Shots in Golf History for Team USA
In a do-or-die situation at the Ryder Cup, Jordan Spieth attempted to put the US Team on his back and dig them out of a literal hole.
Spieth found himself in a grueling spot after teammate Justin Thomas sent a tee shot into the rough on the 17th hole of the Ryder Cup. With the ball buried in thick grass on a steep slope that led to lake Michigan, Spieth stunned everyone by landing the seemingly impossible shot on the green.
The ball was sent high into the air, with The Golf Channel announcers even noting they thought the wind might sail it backwards, but amazingly, the shot came down 8-feet from the hole. Spieth’s feat made for one of the most unbelievable blind shots in golf history, but equally impressive was his ability to stay dry.
After his vicious swing while attempting to balance on the extreme incline, Spieth’s momentum took him charging down the hill, nearly running full sprint into Lake Michigan. But with his arms flailing, Spieth came to a screeching stop. He quickly turned and looked up the hill as the crowd roared, letting the 28-year-old American golfer know the ball landed on the green.
Spieth’s miracle put the US in position to win the hole and continue onto the 18th against Europe’s Jon Rahm and Sergio Garcia. But Thomas couldn’t make the 8-foot putt as they dropped the match to the European Team. The US, however, fared well in their other foursome matches, taking an overall 3-1 lead.
