Pelosi Warns Gaetz After Tweet Threatening Cohen: Ethics Committee Should ‘Vigilantly Monitor’ Statements
Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi (D-CA) rebuked Rep. Matt Gaetz (R-FL) over his tweet threatening Michael Cohen, and recommended that the House Ethics Committee “monitor” Gaetz’s social media.
On Tuesday night, Pelosi tweeted a warning to Gaetz and other members by making obvious reference to Gaetz’s threat. “I encourage all Members to be mindful that comments made on social media or in the press can adversely affect the ability of House Committees to obtain the truthful and complete information necessary to fulfill their duties,” Pelosi said.
“As a result, such statements can be construed as not reflecting creditably on the House, and the Committee on Ethics should vigilantly monitor these types of statements, which may not be protected by the speech or debate clause,” Pelosi added.

Gaetz sent a tweet on Tuesday that was almost universally condemned as an attempt to threaten and tamper with a witness, namely Cohen, ahead of Cohen’s testimony before the House Oversight Committee on Wednesday. Gaetz denies he was threatening Cohen when he tweeted “Hey @MichaelCohen212 – Do your wife & father-in-law know about your girlfriends? Maybe tonight would be a good time for that chat. I wonder if she’ll remain faithful when you’re in prison. She’s about to learn a lot…”
