WATCH: CNN’s Brian Stelter Picks Media’s Biggest Winners and Losers in 2018
CNN’s Brian Stelter used his last Reliable Sources episode of 2018 to list his picks for 2018’s winners and losers in the media.
Stelter started things off on Sunday by giving New York Times and Wall Street Journal props for their scoops over the last 12 months. He also congratulated his colleague Chris Cuomo for being a ratings booster for the network thanks to his new show.
As for losers in the media, Stelter went with the National Enquirer‘s David Pecker for his involvement in the Michael Cohen-Donald Trump hush money scheme. Stelter also slammed Facebook, saying “this has been their worst year ever” between all the disinformation on the platform and their offering of user data to third parties without permission.
Media critic David Zurawik joined Stelter for a chat on this topic, which led to a discussion on how the NFL and various TV programs have also done well recently in the ratings. As Zurawik commented on the intersection of news programming and entertainment on cable television, he echoed Stelter by slamming Sinclair Broadcast Group for how they ran scripted pro-Trump talking points on local news stations throughout the country.
“They were the final piece in what looked to me like a great Trump messaging machine,” Zurawik commented.
The conversation concluded with a review on the de-platforming of Alex Jones, and the circumstances in which Roseanne Barr and Megyn Kelly both lost their shows this year.
