CNN Airs Disturbing Footage of Arizona Shelter Workers Shoving and Dragging Undocumented Migrant Kids
On Sunday, CNN aired footage of shelter workers in Arizona shoving small migrant children under their care.
“We should warn our viewers this is absolutely disturbing,” CNN correspondent Nick Valencia said about the videos, first reported by the Arizona Republic.
He added the videos show staffers “pushing, shoving and even dragging these small undocumented migrants.”
One blurred video then aired showing a worker entering the room at the Hacienda Del Sol shelter in Youngtown, Arizona, while shoving and pushing a small child. He then cornered the child against the wall.
In a second video, another staffer is seen dragging a different child.
The incident reportedly happened in mid-September.
According to CNN, the incidents were reported to local law enforcement as well as federal authorities but no charges were initially filed.
“Overnight,” Valencia continued on, “it seemed to have changed.”
He then read a statement from the Maricopa County Sheriff’s Department which read, in part: “The case will be submitted on Monday and further questions about this matter should be directed to the county attorney.”
Valencia further noted, “After these incidents were brought to light, two of those staffers were fired. Another was disciplined.”
The shelter where the incident happened is now closed. It was run by Southwest Key, the largest provider of migrant shelters for children.
“[It’s] another dark stain on the story of migrants here in the United States,” Valencia said.
