CNN senior data analyst Harry Enten sounded the alarm for Democrats on Sunday with just over three weeks until the November election, noting more Americans are registered Republicans than Democrats for the first time since the 1980s.

Enten joined Inside Politics on Sunday where he broke down some numbers regarding one key metric he told host Manu Raju should have Republicans and former President Donald Trump feeling confident.

The numbers guru explained that for the first time since 1984 – when Ronald Reagan was president – Republicans have an edge nationally and in battleground states as it relates to party identification and registration.

He noted that in 2016 when Trump defeated Hillary Clinton, Democrats had a three-point party registration advantage nationally. In 2020, President Joe Biden won while his party had an eight-point advantage.

As of Sunday, Enten explained, Republicans were ahead by a point in the same metric – putting them four points ahead in party registration and ID than where they were in 2016.

“It actually just shows you, too, why Harris is doing what she’s trying to do, she’s trying to moderate a little bit on these issues,” Raju said in response to the data. “Trying to reach those very voters. Because the party registration is changing, the demographics of the voters are changing. Those are the people she needs to attract.” Enten replied:

You know, the GOP leads by a point in party identification right now, the average when the Republican Party loses is the Democrats ahead by eight. When the Republican party wins, the average party ID advantage for Democrats is three. Republicans right now, Manu, are doing evening better than the average when they win. If there’s one little nugget that I think Republicans are really hopeful for this party ID and this party registration data, it really points in a good direction for them and for Donald Trump.
