New York Attorney General Letitia James filed a motion to hold former President Donald Trump in contempt for his refusal to provide documents in compliance with a civil investigation.

James submitted the court filing on Thursday as part of her probe into Trump’s business practices and possible financial fraud. In the filing, James asked the judge to fine Trump $10,000 per day until he produces the documents she has accused him of withholding despite a subpoena.

Here, OAG requests that the Court impose an appropriate remedy for Mr. Trump’s contemptuous conduct consisting of: (i) a daily fine on Mr. Trump until he produces all responsive documents in the amount of $10,000 per day, a sum sufficient to coerce his compliance with the Court’s February 2022 Order; and (ii) an award to OAG of its fees and costs associated with filing this contempt motion, to be determined based on OAG’s further submission of a costs affidavit.

James offered her own statement on Twitter.

“Despite a crystal clear order from the court, Donald Trump has refused to turn over documents as part of our investigation into him and the Trump Organization’s financial dealings,” she says. “Donald Trump should be fined $10,000 per day for every day that he continues to violate the court’s order to provide these documents to my office. No one is above the law.”

The development comes after Mazars USA, the Trump Organization’s accounting firm, dropped the organization as a client after deeming their financial statements from the past decade were un-credible. Manhattan Supreme Court Judge Arthur Engoron has also called on Trump, Donald Trump Jr., and Ivanka Trump to testify for the investigation.
