Jake Tapper Zings Mike Pompeo After Sunday AM Showdown: He Served as a ‘Trump-to-English Dictionary’
On CNN’s State of the Union Sunday, Jake Tapper confronted Secretary of State Mike Pompeo over a June 2018 tweet from President Donald Trump saying there’s “no longer a Nuclear Threat from North Korea.”
Just landed – a long trip, but everybody can now feel much safer than the day I took office. There is no longer a Nuclear Threat from North Korea. Meeting with Kim Jong Un was an interesting and very positive experience. North Korea has great potential for the future!

Tapper asked Pompeo if he considers North Korea a nuclear threat. Pompeo said yes, and Tapper told him, “But the president said he doesn’t.”
“That’s not what he said,” Pompeo said, leading to Tapper reading the quote from the tweet.
“What he said was the efforts made in Singapore, this commitment that Chairman Kim made, have substantially taken down the risk to the American people. It’s the mission of the secretary of state and the President of the United States to keep American people secure. We’re aiming to achieve that.
Tapper emphasized that was a direct quote from the president before moving on.
He ran that clip on The Lead Monday, noting the “disconnect,” as he and the panel previewed the big Vietnam summit with Kim Jong Un.
“The Secretary there kind of offering something of a Trump-to-English dictionary,” Tapper added.
