Art of the Deal Co-Author Tony Schwartz: Cohen Testimony Should be ‘End of the Trump Presidency’ if True
Art of the Deal co-author Tony Schwartz told CNN tonight that if Michael Cohen’s testimony against President Donald Trump tomorrow turns out to be factual, then it “should mean the end of the Trump presidency.”
“You believe this is a historic moment?” CNN host Anderson Cooper asked Schwartz, referencing tomorrow’s testimony from Cohen, who spent many years working for Trump as a personal lawyer and “fixer” and will reportedly accuse the president of criminal activity, per the Wall Street Journal.
“Unequivocally,” Schwartz replied. “It kind of gives me a chill when I think I’m old enough, unfortunately, to have been there when John Dean testified before Congress, when Alexander Butterfield revealed that Nixon was doing tapes. This could be a big moment.”
He continued:
“We already know he’s planning on accusing him of criminal activity, that he’s going to accuse him of lying and cheating. So, what we know is that it’s going to be an accusation that — if true — would demand that Trump be impeached and convicted. Now, that’s a political calculation in the end. But on any legitimate grounds, if what Cohen says tomorrow is true, it should mean the end of the Trump presidency.”
However, Schwartz hedged his bets by noting it’s possible that Cohen — who was convicted of lying in front of Congress previously — could “be lying again.”
“We don’t know for sure, but my strong guess is he’s going to produce some pretty considerable documentary evidence that what he’s saying is true,” he said. “What’s interesting for the Republicans and you can see it already, is that the only possible way to go here is to go after his credibility.”
Cohen is expected to present a document incriminating Trump in the Stormy Daniels hush-money scheme during his testimony before the House Oversight Committee on Wednesday.
