Rep. Ro Khanna (D-CA) is defending Vice President JD Vance’s wife, Usha [Vance], and their children from online trolls who have been speculating over their religion.

Khanna posted to X on Saturday, “No one has been harsher on @JDVance policy than I have. But his wife is an accomplished daughter of immigrants and they have young kids. Attack on the policies. Leave his family out of it.”

The spotlight was thrust on Usha Vance, who was raised in the Hindu faith by Telugu Indian immigrant parents, after the vice president expressed a desire for her to convert to Christianity and join him in the Catholic church.

Vance told an audience at the University of Mississippi this week, “Do I hope eventually that she is somehow moved by the same thing that I was moved by in church? Yeah, I honestly do wish that because I believe in the Christian Gospel, and I hope eventually my wife comes to see it the same way.”

The vice president’s comments were made in front of thousands of students as part of a Turning Point USA event honoring the late Charlie Kirk.

Social media erupted over the vice president’s public comments about such a private matter as wanting his wife to convert.

Vance did defend his wife against racist attacks from white nationalist Nick Fuentes, who said last month, “Who is this guy, really? Do we really expect that the guy who has an Indian wife and named their kid Vivek is going to support white identity?”

JD Vance told ABC News’s Jon Karl, “And my view is, look, if these guys want to attack me or attack my views, my policy views, my personality, come after me, but don’t attack my wife. She’s out of your league.”

He added, “I wish people would keep it focused on me. But, whatever. They’re going to say what they’re going to stay. My wife’s tough enough to handle it and that’s a good thing.”
