Dr. Jonathan Reiner Rips Trump Mocking Covid Coverage: Imagine FDR, Churchill Complaining ‘Why Do They Always Ask Me About the War?’
Dr. Jonathan Reiner, a cardiologist who served as a Bush White House medical adviser, slammed President Donald Trump Tuesday night for his continued downplaying of the coronavirus pandemic.
The president has recently taken to going off on coverage of “covid, covid, covid” in the media in this final leg of the campaign, amid reports of spikes in coronavirus cases in a number of states.
“Record hospitalizations, record deaths in that state. Yet a rally, largely maskless, no social distancing,” CNN’s Erin Burnett said. “The president’s strategy… is ‘covid, covid, covid, fake news.'”
Reiner said that Trump is “gaslighting the country” and “putting his supporters and the rest of the country at greater peril when he does that.”
“Imagine Winston Churchill or FDR during the war saying, ‘War, war, war, why do they always ask me about the war?'” he continued. “Because it’s the predominant preeminent challenge that we’re facing right now is covid. We had 73,000 new cases today. Over the last week, we’ve averaged 71,000 new cases every day. We have had 500,000 new cases in the last week. You can close your eyes to it, but this is not going away.”
