Reporter Breaks Down Stunning Facebook News on Meet the Press — And All Anyone Can Talk About Is His Headband
Wall Street Journal reporter Jeff Horwitz appeared on Meet the Press Sunday to discuss some serious developments around one of the biggest social media platforms in the world and increased scrutiny from political leaders.
But all anyone can talk about is his headband.
Horwitz has been one of the Journal’s main reporters covering many stunning stories about Facebook. A team of journalists revealed how Facebook is aware Instagram is toxic for teen girls, how its own platform was hurting efforts to get more people vaccinated, and much more.
Horwitz spoke with Chuck Todd about these revelations, apparently provided by a Facebook whistleblower, describing a “very weird mentality” at Facebook and calling out a memo from executive Nick Clegg on the site’s contribution to political polarization.
At one point he said, “A big reason why this information has made it to me is that even when Facebook does discover problems and they are fixable, the company hasn’t acted according to a lot of the people who have been assigned to fix these issues.”
Also he wore a headband.
So naturally it was the headband that got the most attention on Twitter.

I know there are more serious things to discuss here but the way this headband hit me squarely in my funny bone this morning https://t.co/YCzFgpCVvy

Horwitz reacted with some amusement on Twitter, remarking, “When I woke up at 4am Pacific, I was motivated by two desires: to contribute to productive discourse about a world-altering technology company and to wear a sport-coat accessorized sweatband on national television. I am 100% confident I accomplished the latter.”

Thank you! The headband has been a pretty constant thing for me throughout a very long and weird Covid-time reporting project. Glad it was a bit of fun for folks at the show. https://t.co/TAgbp6VvQJ

As if that wasn’t enough exciting headband news for one day, New York Times media columnist Ben Smith followed through on a tweet musing he would also don a headband for his appearance on Reliable Sources.
You can watch Horwitz’s headband (and also the segment on the serious controversy around Facebook) above, via NBC.
