Sen. Leahy Tells FBI Director ‘A Hell of a Lot More’ People Should Be in Prison for Failures in Larry Nassar Case

Sen. Patrick Leahy (D-VT) did not mince words while addressing FBI Director Christopher Wray during a hearing on the bureau’s failure to properly investigate the horrific abuse Larry Nassar inflicted on members of USA Gymnastics.

“It is troubling to me to see that an FBI agent who lied, broke the law, knew he was breaking the law – and nothing happens,” an angry Leahy said on Tuesday. “I understand the procedures but it bothers me greatly that failures by the FBI field office in Indianapolis delayed the start of the investigation of Larry Nassar’s widespread sexual assaults of over 100 victims. And everybody, I don’t care where they are on the political spectrum or anything else, had to be torn apart listening to the testimony of these victims this morning.”

Leahy went on to note that Aly Raisman, who was among those who testified Tuesday, said she had neither a parent nor lawyer present while being questioned by the FBI.

Wray assured Leahy that the FBI is now ensuring that emphasis is put on training child and adolescent forensic interviewers, stressing the importance of treating these interviews uniquely due to the specific sensitivities.

Leahy then pointed to former FBI agent Michael Langeman, who was recently fired after Michael Horowitz, the Justice Department’s inspector general, issued a July 2021 report that harshly condemned the FBI for committing a series of “fundamental errors” that enabled Nassar’s abuse for months.

The senator questioned what took so long for the FBI to hold Langeman accountable for his failures, prompting Wray to explain that they waited for the report and fired the former agent following a disciplinary process.

Taking it one step further, Leahy then asked Horowitz, also present during the hearing, if there have been any recommendations that Langeman be prosecuted due to his actions.

Horowitz explained that it is not his place to make that recommendation, directing him to Justice Department officials.

“I’ll just close by saying … a whole lot of people should be prosecuted here besides Nassar, who obviously should be prosecuted, but I’m thinking of some of the people within the athletic field who were aware of this and turned a blind eye to it, who did nothing to it, and allowed all these victims to be there.”

“A whole lot of people should be in prison,” he added. “I’m glad he’s in prison, but I got to tell you, frankly, as a parent, as a grandparent, there’s a hell of a lot more I’d like to see in prison.”
