John Oliver covered the end of the Mueller probe on Sunday’s episode of Last Week Tonight, mocking media defenders of President Donald Trump who have declared total exoneration and vindication in the years-long investigation.

After pointing out that Mueller’s report found insufficient evidence of a conspiracy between Trump and Russia, but did not make a determination on obstruction, Oliver said: “All week long, the president’s supporters took their one piece of good news, and rounded it up to two.”

Oliver then aired clips of Fox hosts Sean Hannity, Jeanine Pirro, and Lou Dobbs celebrating Trump’s supposed exoneration.

“Again, Trump was not completely exonerated. In fact, the report literally used the words, ‘does not exonerate him.’ The only way Mueller could have been clearer on that point is if he put hand-clap emojis between every word,” Oliver said.

“Normally this is where we’d do a deep dive into the details of the report, explaining all of the possible implications it may have,” Oliver said. “The problem is: we still haven’t seen it. Congress hasn’t seen it. Even the president hasn’t seen it. We only know what Trump’s own attorney general thinks we need to know. A man who, unsolicited, and before he got his current job, sent top DOJ officials a memo ruling out obstruction of justice charges against the president. So there are plenty of qualifiers and questions left here.”

Oliver added it was “strange” to see Trump supporters like Laura Ingraham say the investigation was “all a waste.”

“Even if the investigation didn’t conclude that Trump conspired with the Russians, that doesn’t mean that the whole thing was a waste of time,” Oliver continued.

“Just for a moment, try and imagine that it all came out at once, and there was a single headline that said: Russia confirmed to have interfered in election, and president’s campaign manager, lawyer and multiple advisors convicted of crimes; and Trump and his team lied about business with Russia, contact with Russians; and Trump may have committed campaign finance violations to cover up affair with adult film star shortly after his wife gave birth and which he also attempted to continue but ended up sitting next to the adult film star in a hotel room and watching Shark Week.”

“So this scandal has been sitting in plain sight for so long, we’ve stopped noticing it,” he said.
