Liberal talk show host Thom Hartmann tore into U.S. “Freedom Convoy” organizer Michael Letts, calling his group “pathetic” for protesting mask and vaccine mandates while Ukrainians “fight and die for freedom.”

Mr. Letts was Mr. Hartmann’s guest on an episode of The Thom Hartmann Program earlier this week to discuss the trucker convoy that was inspired by similar protests in Canada that brought traffic at the U.S./Canada border to a standstill a few weeks ago. Letts is the co-chairman of Freedom Convoy USA 2022.

Hartmann began the interview with a respectful introduction that was followed by an opening question that set the tone for the rest of the segment:

MR. HARTMANN: Here’s how this looks from where I’m sitting, and I’m wondering if you can set me straight on this or what. People are dying in Ukraine to defend real freedom. And you guys are burning tons of diesel fuel to complain about masks? I mean, that seems kind of pathetic. What am I missing?

MR. LETTS: Well, I think what you’re missing, quite frankly, Tom, is the fact that it’s not just masks. It’s the issue of freedom itself when there are mandates that have been placed on these people of this country that have been disastrous.

MR. HARTMANN: You’re talking about vaccine mandates.

MR. LETTS: Vaccine mandates. Mask mandates. Overreaching of the government. Tyranny by the government. And in fact, what it has done to the business, the economy, to the children who can’t even participate in schools without fear of being ostracized because they’re not wearing the right mask or because of the fact that they’re getting too close to children, enough is enough.

Things went steadily downhill from there, as Letts expressed false and harmful beliefs about the vaccine, and went on to falsely claim that health authorities have falsified Covid death and hospitalization data based on “financial incentives,” then tried to debate Hartmann on oil policy.

Exit question for Mr. Hartmann: would a “pathetic” person sit there for 10 minutes and explain why he’s not pathetic? Think about it.
