CNN’s Kaitlan Collins: There’s ‘A Sense of Panic’ in WH Over Trump Threat to Close Border

CNN White House correspondent Kaitlan Collins said on The Lead Tuesday afternoon that the White House has been struck with “a sense of panic” over President Donald Trump‘s threat to close the border.

Collins reported today on the “mad scramble” in the West Wing to figure this out:

After acting chief of staff Mick Mulvaney said the President would follow through on his threat “unless something dramatic” happened, aides huddled in the West Wing with two goals: find a way to keep Trump from closing the border, and if that wasn’t doable, figure out the logistics in case he does.

Administration officials have been unable to articulate when or for how long the President would close the border, whether that closure would apply to air travel and what it would mean for the US economy.

Trump has reportedly been warned in private about this being a bad idea. Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell publicly said this afternoon the economic consequences to closing the border are “potentially catastrophic.”

The president himself acknowledged the economic impact but said security is more important than trade.

His response to concerns, Collins said, has been that “he thinks the U.S. can actually save money by doing this.”

“I’m told the president has not made a final decision, but they do expect him to do so by the time he goes to the border on Friday,” she added.
