Adam Schiff Fires Back at Republicans Demanding His Resignation: It’s ‘Deeply Regrettable’
House Intelligence Committee Chairman Adam Schiff (D-CA) called out the Republican members of his committee who are rebelling against his leadership, saying their actions are “deeply regrettable” and expose their extreme loyalty to President Donald Trump
“This goes back a couple of years, really, to the decision by Chairman Nunes to make his membership mission to defend the president at all costs, act as the legal defense team for the president,” Schiff told CNN’s Wolf Blitzer. “That has continued, regrettably, into this session.”
“It is deeply regrettable that they chose this tactic,” he added. “It can’t help but have an impact on the committee.”
In a letter sent to Intel chairman last week, House Intel member Rep. Mike Conaway (R-TX) wrote that Schiff does not have the “ability to discharge your duties in a manner consistent with your constitutional responsibility.” In light of the end of the Mueller investigation, Conway also said Schiff’s history of going after Trump over suggestions of Russian collusion are “incompatible with your duties as the chairman of this committee.”
As for Republican concerns of investigative overreach, Schiff insisted his members are “not overreaching at all.”
“We need to do our oversight, it’s our constitutional obligation,” he continued. “We need to make sure that the president of the united states is acting in our national interests, and not because of some hidden financial or other motivation. To do otherwise would be just plain negligent.”
