‘I Am an Actor!’: Viral Star Geoffrey Owens Shouts Out Trader Joe’s, Brings Down House at SAG Awards

Geoffrey Owens — the former Cosby Show star who went viral this past fall after a photo emerged of him working at a Trader Joe’s in New Jersey — drew a huge ovation during a brief cameo at Sunday night’s Screen Actors Guild Awards.

As part of the show’s open, several actors who discussed their backstories, and why they chose the profession. Owens, who most notably starred in The Cosby Show as Elvin, talked about the job he took to stay afloat and continue working as an actor.

“Somewhere in the middle of the road of my life, I found myself in the dark wood of unemployment and debt,” Owens said. “But instead of switching careers like a sane person, I took a job at a local Trader Joe’s to see if I could hang in there with my career. And it’s actually worked out pretty well. I’m Geoffrey Owens and I am an actor!”

The brief remarks brought down the house. Owens, according to IMDB, is ticketed for several forthcoming roles — including a guest spot in the fourth season of the Showtime series Billions, and a supporting part in the new thriller Fatale, starring Hilary Swank.
