Pompeo Denies There’s ‘Direct Evidence Linking’ Saudi Crown Prince to Khashoggi’s Murder

By News Here - 00:01

Secretary of State Mike Pompeo denied there is “direct evidence linking” Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman to the murder of Jamal Khashoggi in an interview Saturday.

Pompeo — a former CIA Director — was asked by CNN’s Wolf Blitzer about the reported assessment from the agency that MbS ordered the brutal killing of the Saudi journalist and dissident.

“You’re a former CIA director, so you understand how U.S. intelligence analysis works,” Blitzer said. “You said there’s no direct reporting connecting the crown prince to ordering the murder of Jamal Khashoggi. Can you confidently tell his four children he was not involved in that murder?”

“I have read every piece of intelligence in the possession of the United States government,” Pompeo replied. “When it is done, when you complete that analysis, there’s no direct evidence linking him to the murder of Jamal Khashoggi. That’s an accurate statement, it is an important statement, and it is the statement that we are making publicly today.”

“Did the CIA conclude with high confidence that he was involved?” BLitzer asked.

“I can’t comment on intelligence matters,” Pompeo replied. He added that media reports are “often untrue.”

Blitzer went on to ask Pompeo about the Trump administration losing support from Congress on its policy towards Saudi Arabia and Yemen. This week, a bipartisan group of 63 senators voted for a resolution calling to limit U.S. involvement in the war in Yemen.
